5-Week Midlife Diet Reset Workbook
The other day, I was watching an Instagram video from a 52-year-old fitness influencer who looks absolutely incredible. She was talking about the changes she’d made to her body over the years when she said something that caught me completely off guard. She told women our age that we need to stop eating like toddlers who constantly need their little snacks, treats, and rewards to get through the day.
At first, I laughed. Then I was slightly offended. But the longer I thought about it, the more I realized she had a point. And unfortunately, I could see some of those behaviors in myself.
Think about how toddlers act when they’re tired, cranky, bored, or don’t get what they want. They want their favorite snack, something sweet, or whatever makes them feel better in the moment. And honestly, how different are we sometimes?
We have a stressful day, so we deserve takeout. We’re exhausted, so we want something sweet. We’re bored, so we wander into the kitchen looking for a snack. Maybe it’s a glass of wine to unwind every evening, a sugary coffee drink to get through the afternoon, or a bowl of ice cream because we’ve had a terrible day.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve convinced ourselves that every uncomfortable mood deserves a little reward.
Are We Eating Like Adults or Just Feeding Our Cravings?
I’ve struggled with my weight since my late thirties, and I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to feel like you’re doing so many things right but still not seeing the results you want. I eat plenty of healthy foods, stay active, and genuinely care about my health. But I also have a serious sweet tooth, and I’ve caught myself looking for something sugary after meals even when I’m completely full.
When I started thinking about that influencer’s comments, I realized how often we eat based on what sounds good rather than what our bodies actually need. We’re perfectly capable of preparing balanced meals with protein, vegetables, and nutritious foods, yet sometimes we’d rather pick at crackers, chips, cheese, or whatever happens to be in the pantry.
And there’s nothing wrong with enjoying those foods occasionally. But if we’re constantly choosing convenience foods, grazing throughout the day, or giving in to cravings whenever we’re in a bad mood, we shouldn’t be surprised when our eating habits aren’t supporting our health goals.
I think the hardest part is admitting that sometimes we simply don’t want to tell ourselves no.
At Some Point, We Have to Practice Discipline
I know discipline isn’t a particularly exciting word, especially when it comes to food. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that learning to manage our cravings is just part of taking responsibility for our health.
Sometimes that means tracking calories to understand how much we’re actually eating. Sometimes it means taking a break from sugar because we’ve gotten into the habit of eating it constantly. Other times it means cutting back on processed snacks, planning healthier meals, or deciding that we don’t need a treat every time we’ve had a difficult day.
None of those things has to be extreme. They’re simply tools that can help us recognize our patterns and make better decisions.
That’s actually why I created my 5-Week Midlife Diet Reset Workbook. It focuses on making intentional changes to your eating habits, including becoming more aware of what you’re consuming, addressing sugar habits, and building a healthier approach to food one week at a time.
If you’re tired of feeling controlled by cravings or constantly starting over with your eating habits, it’s a practical way to begin making changes.
The Real Problem Might Not Be the Food
What really struck me about that video wasn’t the suggestion that we should never eat cookies or enjoy a good meal. It was the idea that we’ve gotten so used to comforting ourselves with food and drinks that we sometimes forget we have a choice.
We’re adults, yet we can find ourselves acting like cranky children when we’re hungry, tired, or stressed. We want what we want, and we want it now. And if we’ve had a particularly hard day, we can come up with a hundred reasons why we deserve it.
I recognize that behavior in myself more often than I’d like to admit.
But I also recognize that the woman I want to be at 50, 60, and beyond isn’t someone who gives in to every craving simply because it’s there. I want to be healthy, strong, energetic, and confident in my ability to follow through on the things that matter to me.
That doesn’t mean I’ll never enjoy dessert or have another lazy evening with pizza. It means I want those moments to be choices rather than automatic reactions to how I’m feeling.
And maybe that’s the biggest lesson I took away from that Instagram video. We spend so much time looking for the perfect diet, the right workout, or the secret to losing weight in midlife, when sometimes the first thing we need to address is our everyday behavior.
We don’t always need another excuse, another treat, or another promise that we’ll start fresh on Monday.
Sometimes we just need to stop eating like toddlers and start making choices that reflect the grown women we want to become.
